Job Summary: Applies knowledge and techniques to identify and manage risks involving ionizing and non-ionizing radiation in support of AFTAC's nuclear treaty and nuclear event detection missions. Works directly with scientists, engineers and technicians to analyze solutions supporting critical national-level requirements. Assists in the development of radiological control procedures supporting research projects and laboratory operations. Evaluates personnel radiation exposures in support of domestic and international events. Supports radiochemistry laboratory activities to include: mitigating incidents involving radioactive materials; performing area surveys; radioactive material accountability; radioactive waste and mixed waste operations; ensures the As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) concept is maximized.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintains the organization's thermo luminescent dosimetry program.
  • Certifies the shipping and transportation of radioactive materials.
  • Assists with managing assigned NRC and 91 B radioactive materials permits.
  • Performs radiofrequency radiation safety surveys on equipment producing non-ionizing radiation.
  • Performs ionizing radiation surveys using alpha, beta and gamma instrumentation
  • Analyzes samples for alpha/beta contamination using portable and fixed laboratory equipment
  • Performs radiological decontamination at deployed locations and within laboratory.
  • Trains personnel on the proper use/wear of personal protection equipment used in a radiological environment.
  • Performs non-ionizing radiation surveys and determines the level of hazard and permissible exposure levels/distance requirements
  • Reviews gamma spectroscopy data to determine quantitative and qualitative isotopic constituents


  • RSO training related to the management of an NRC license
  • Qualifications to ship/transport radioactive materials lAW 49 CFR and lATA
  • Perform radio frequency radiation safety surveys
  • Experience with radiation survey meters (use, operation and calibration)
  • Knowledge of radiation dose limits for occupational workers and members of the public
  • Works well independently or as part of a group
  • Ability to research technical issues
  • Ability to identify problems, communicate them, and propose solutions
  • Ability to manage time & resources
  • Ability to write reports to present to management
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Effective communicator


  • Attended Radioactive Materials Shipping Training Course
  • Familiar with alpha/beta gas proportional counter operation and data reporting
  • Familiar with the NRC's Increased Controls and SUNSI requirements.
  • Familiar with gamma spectroscopy data analysis
  • Knowledge of neutron spectroscopy/detection relative to fast neutron environments


  • Bachelor's degree in a physics related field, or the equivalent training and experience plus 5-8 years of professional experience in ionizing and non-ionizing radiation related fields.
  • Master's degree is desired.
  • OR 9 - 12 years of experience

Special Requirements:

  • Some tasks may require travel to CONUS and OCONUS locations with time-critical deadlines
  • No unique physical requirements
  • Tasks are accomplished in a state-of-the-art technology environment
  • Active clearance required to be considered for this position
