Job Summary: This research scientist position will be supporting the Air Force Technical Applications Center's (AFTAC) Environmental Modeling and Simulation (EMS) program, the Environmental Sciences Division, and the Materials Directorate with subject matter expertise in environmental science. The candidate is expected to have relevant experience at the graduate, post-graduate, or private level and will support EMS with expertise and guidance in such areas as nuclear physics, chemistry, meteorology, engineering, and computer science in order to provide national level decision makers, and AFTAC leadership with timely, accurate, and usable analysis and evaluation reports. The candidate will be expected to be able to define, determine, and interpreted national level requirements, strategic vision, goals, objectives, and priorities in order to help support AFTAC resource allocation and program direction. The candidate must have experience working with national stakeholders and be able to coordinate efforts between these stakeholders and AFTAC in support of Mission requirements. In addition, the candidate will serve on an AFTAC expert panel supporting EMS requirements.
Essential Job Functions:
- Support AFTAC EMS requirements development, national level planning, and EMS report generation.
- Support AFTAC EMS Expert Panel with expertise in environmental modeling
- Contact with the customer/provide customer support (may be internal or external customer)
- Will conduct research
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Expertise in atmospheric science or related discipline
- Fortran, C, Matlab and other scientific programming languages
- Problem solver
- Formal coursework and/or research in atmospheric science, chemistry, meteorology
- Formal coursework and/or research in numerical modeling related to above processes
- Coding or algorithm development experience in a scientific language
- Working in MS Windows and Linux environments
- Good interpersonal skills
- Effective communicator
- Works well independently or as part of a group
- Good writing skills, as there will be a requirement to write reports
- Degree of judgment and multi-tasking associated with performing job duties
- AFTAC Expert Panel support experience desired
Education:

MA/MS + 10 years experience OR BA/BS + 12 years experience

16+ years experience in lieu of degree
