Job Summary:

Zel Technologies is seeking candidates for a Health Physics Engineer (Radiation/Laser Safety) position to support the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) Research & Development Directorate (RD). The successful candidate will help in identifying and conducting innovative, operationally focused CWMD and other asymmetric threat-related research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) in order to deliver products and services to combatant commanders (CCDRs), the Military Services, and DTRA.  The System Engineering and Integration (SE&I) support provided to the Research & Development Directorate (RD) Test Science and Technology Department (RDTS) ensures effective program execution from technical management to test operational support. RDTS, located at Kirtland Air Force Base (AFB), New Mexico (NM), also maintains mobile test capabilities and operates permanent test sites at Kirtland AFB; White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), NM; and Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), Nevada (NV).  The RDTS provides end-to-end test event planning, management, test bed design and construction, pre-test predictions, safe execution, and post-test data analysis.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform the duties of the Radiological Safety officer (RSO), Laser Safety officer and test team member


  • Provide local oversight for the Agency's broad scope radiologic license


  • Review and recommend radiological controls and requirements for specific research and test events


  • Maintain the radiologic inventory, conduct the periodic leak sampling, maintain the sampling equipment and maintain documentation as required by the license and the DTRA RSO


  • Train and document local users of radioactive material IAW the DTRA broadscope radioactive license and industry standard radioactive safety procedures


  • Perform and oversee all requirements to process, ship, and receive Class 7 Radioactive Material

  • Review potential test programs and provide recommendations on whether DTRA can conduct the test event and what limitations may exist or be required 


  • Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) course or equivalent to NRC guidelines - 40 Hour Course


  • Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) Qualified under NRC Broad Scope License, ANSI Z136.1


  • Laser Safety Officer (LSO) Certification


  • Certification Health Physicist (CHP) by American Board of Health Physics


  • Good interpersonal skills       


  • Effective communicator (verbal and written)


  • Respond to inquiries from customers, management, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.


  • Ability to manage time & resources


  • Ability to write reports to present to management


  • Contact with the customer/provide customer support


  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Effective communicator 


  • DTRA RSO/LSO Experience desired

  • Training material development experience desired


  • BA/BS + 5 years experience OR 4 - 9 years experience in lieu of degree

Special Requirements: 

  • Must have a current Secret clearance with the ability to acquire a TS clearance and obtain a Special Compartmental Information (SCI) level clearance
