Job Summary / Responsibilities: This laboratory technician I position will be supporting the Air Force Technical Applications Center's (AFTAC) Materials Production Laboratory (AMPL-1) with daily lab equipment sustainment and operation, wetlab reagent and sample preperation, development of standard operating procedures, and report generation. The candidate will be provided specific mission related tasking and be expected to independently develop the proper approach/solution.

Essential Job Functions: 

  • The candidate shall provide mass spectrometry laboratory support to include:
  • Creating laboratory reagents
  • Maintaining laboratory hygiene
  • Laboratory preparation for sample processing such as lab equipment operation, installation, validation, and documentation.
  • Disposing of radioactive waste in accordance with Federal, State and local laws while following AFTAC Safety Office (SE) waste
  • Following radiochemistry standard operating procedures as written to transition environmental samples to laboratory samples for analysis.
  • Loading and unloading of radioisotope samples.
  • Preparation of experimental equipment.
  • Monitoring safety systems.
  • Experience following SOPs, QA/QC protocols and documenting process outcomes.
  • Screening, analyzing, and reporting gamma spectra.
  • General laboratory skills to support gamma spectrometry counting and analysis
    operations are required.

  • High level of attention to detail
  • Trace level chemistry (radiochemistry, molecular/biological or environmental)
  • Laboratory standard operating procedures
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Effective communicator
  • Works well independently or as part of a group
  • Good writing skills, as there may be a requirement to write reports
  • Degree of judgment and multi-tasking associated with performing job duties
  • May conduct some research

Education Requirements:  BA/BS or 912year's experience


Experience working in indus trial, electronics, nuclear or chemical environments is
Experience operating High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) gamma spectrometers is desired.
